Denver (Museum and Rockies Baseball)

Posted by on July 7, 2014

We headed back into Denver today to explore the city.  So many things to pick from in the Mile High City and we only had one more day in this area.  We started the day at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.  Normally, museums are not super high on my or the kids to-do list but we had heard great things about this one through different reviews. We decided to get the regular admission + planetarium pass.  They had other add-ons such as the IMAX theater and the current special exhibit (Mayan Culture) but we decided to forgo those.  The museum was enormous and covered 3 large floors with tons of exhibits.  We started at the Space Odyssey section and explored it until it was time for our planetarium show, “Black Holes, the Other Side of Infinity”.  We have always tried to not shy away from things that differ from our Biblical Creationist views and this was no different.

Some of the subject matter discussed was very evolutionistic, but it gave us great talking points for discussion with the children.  After leaving the planetarium and space area, we headed to the various sections (Gems and Minerals, Expedition Health, North American wildlife, Dinosaurs, and African wildlife over the next several hours.  The dioramas and quality details made this museum really shine.  We stayed all the way to closing time at 5pm and had a great day. We left with our minds saturated with great educational facts and learnings and left for the Colorado Rockies baseball game against the San Diego Padres that evening.kids at game

The game didn’t start until 6:40 that night and was just a short drive away from the museum.  We sprung for the premium seats in Infield Club Section 227 near home plate.  It is so rare for us to go to a baseball game(other than our hometown minor league Riverdogs) that we decided we might as well be close to the action with good seats.  The area was nice with special air conditioned areas for you to stand inside and dedicated concessions.  Particularly useful on a night Lindsay had dressed the kids for 40 degree weather and it was actually low 90’s at batting practice pregame.  The game, the stadium and the food were great.  We had our share of all you can eat popcorn, pizza, foot long hot dogs, soda, funnel cake and Dippin Dots ice cream. No one ever said baseball food was healthy!  The game was mostly uneventful.  We did get to see a Rockies player hit a solo home run.  The lightning and thunder started in the 5th inning far in the distance and continued to work its way towards us.  By the top of the 8th inning, the rain had started and a rain delay was called.  We watched the field crew scurry about as they tarped the field in record time.  The wind kicked up and almost blew away the tarp.  The dedicated crew splayed out their bodies as human sandbags until the rest of the crew could place real sandbags around the tarp to hold it in place.  As we stood inside, we checked the weather radar and realized that the rain delay could be lengthy.  We decided to go ahead and call it a ballgame.  We walked/ran back to our car and got only mildly soaked.  Even though the hometown Rockies eventually lost 6-1, we had a great day in Denver and hope to visit again one day to explore all it has to offer.rockies game
