Lake Powell (Day 2)

Posted by on July 19, 2014

The plan for today was: to wake early at 6am, get out on the lake by 6:30, enjoy the calmer water for 4 hours, take an extended long lunch of several hours back in the cool camper and then enjoy the Wahweap Bay area until we had to return the boat at 5pm.  When the alarm sounded at 6am, we rolled over and said “Not going to happen”.  Fast forward till 9:30 am and we were starting breakfast. By 10:30 we were off from the dock for a second day of exploration on beautiful Lake Powell!

We made great time now that we knew where to go and I better trusted Lindsay’s navigation skills. We travelled up-lake to buoy 29 and explored and swam in the lake all the way back to Waheap for the next 6.5 hours.  We enjoyed the Padre Bay, Gunsight Canyon, Warm Creek Bay and other canyons.  We found several sandy beaches (harder to do than one might think in a rock canyon) where we could pull the boat up and tie off and swim.  As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to Waheap Bay and went to the far western end to explore the massive Lone Rock.

Both Thomas and Victoria swam over to it and found a rock ledge to stand on at the base of the rock that was all alone out the middle of the bay.  We drove up Lone Rock Canyon and Wiregrass Canyon and found a great rock that the kids could climb up and then jump off of- they had a blast and wanted me to find one that was even higher.

Alas, we were out of time.  We returned our trusty vessel to the rental company.  Two days to explore the lake was perfect for us.  We had a great time here on Lake Powell. We used the evening to relax, get laundry done and do some grocery shopping.  Tomorrow we are off to the Grand Canyon!
