Drive from Rocky Mtn NP to Steamboat Springs

Posted by on July 10, 2013

G Again.  We left RMNP at 11am for the drive that was supposed to be 140 miles to Steamboat Springs.  That shorter route would have taken us over the steep Trail Ridge Road inside RMNP with a 60′ vehicle (40 of camper and 20 of dinghy toad) so I decided to take the route south out of Estes Park and connect into I-70 and then back secondary roads up to Steamboat Springs.  Poor planning on my part not to research the roads that we would be driving.  They had just as much steepness and switchbacks as Trail Ridge and were almost twice the distance.  We finally pulled into Steamboat at just before 5pm.  The kids took a quick dip in the campground pool and played on the playground.  We got showers and headed into old downtown Steamboat Springs for dinner.  After a less than memorable dining experience at Johnny B Goods restaurant (a 50’s style restaurant), we headed down the main street to check out F.M. Light and Sons retail store.  Pretty neat 108 year old store with authentic western stuff.  We had seen their signs for almost 80 miles up the secondary roads on ranch lands- kind of like a South of the Border Colorado style.  Much to the manager’s chagrin, we bought a grand total of $4.72 worth of goods (One Steamboat Springs magnet) and then charged it on a credit card.  Next we were off to possibly the smallest Walmart that we have ever seen.  The entire Walmart (market and household) could have fit into a standard size grocery store.  We picked up some essentials and then went to the nearby grocery store.  Watched a quick episode of Gilligans Island and all in bed for a good night sleep.
